When you hear the words “storytelling”, you may typically picture people sitting round the campfire swapping yarns. It sounds folksy, even fun perhaps, but not something that you might associate with life in a modern organisation. While it’s true that humans have been telling each other stories for as long as they’ve walked the earth, the ancient art of storytelling does have considerable relevance to Australian businesses in the 2020s…

With members of the Seven Patterns team on the ground at Diggers & Dealers, where the mining industry meets, we were listening to the conversations behind the headlines, connecting with clients, partners, industry leaders and investors, and collaborating with MiningNews.net to capture the stories that matter…

Seven Patterns is pleased to announce a strengthened commitment to the Eagles Business Club, the business network of the West Coast Eagles. Building on impactful collaboration to date, including co-presenting and content capturing at events, Seven Patterns is helping to position the Eagles Business Club front and centre to further strengthen its voice, profile, and influence as one of Australia's premier business networks…

Most founders I have worked with underinvest in communication. Not because they do not believe in it, but because they think it can wait. Get the product right first. Build the team. Close the revenue. Then worry about how you talk about it. The cost of that sequence is usually higher than people realise. Because communication is not a downstream activity. It is a multiplier and like any multiplier, leaving it unattended does not keep things flat. It compounds in the wrong direction. Here is what I have consistently seen…

There are many elements to developing a crisis plan, including preparing and planning for how communication will be managed during a crisis situation. Having a plan for managing communication is vital as this will help to mitigate the risk of reputational damage and assist in returning to business as usual as quickly as possible.

Identifying suitable awards, and preparing an effective and professional submission, are steps that are too important to leave to chance.  Believing that someone, somewhere, will simply spot your organisation’s brilliant idea and recognise you for it is a nice concept, but one that is unlikely to deliver results…

There’s something unique yet significant about standing in a room where sport meets business. That was the backdrop for my recent keynote at Mineral Resources Park — the home of the West Coast Eagles — speaking to new members of West Coast Connect. It was more that just another networking event; it was a reminder of something simple, but often underestimated…

Is it just us, or should this month be branded Fast February? 2026 is already moving at pace, and so are the expectations on leaders, brands and organisations big and small. Market conditions are shifting quickly, policy settings are tightening, AI is reshaping the economy, public trust remains fragile, and attention is becoming harder to earn yet easier to lose…

In 2025, we worked alongside growth-minded organisations navigating change, complexity, and an ever-changing economic and political climate. Across four states, we partnered with leaders across the business, government, and not-for-profit sectors to help them create influence — for good. Corporate strategy, communications, and creative execution were often strong on their own, but rarely working as one. The result…

The NDIS is now costing Australia $46 billion a year, up 32 per cent in just two years. Growing at an average of 24 per cent per year since 2020, it has become one of the fastest-rising pressures on the federal budget, outpacing GDP, wages and population growth. It’s a scheme built on good intent and life-changing outcomes. But growth on this scale, without matching impact, isn’t success — it’s a system losing control of its own purpose.

West Coast Connect has always been about bringing together business and sport. But right now, nothing is making bigger waves across both fields than AI — a force reshaping industries, redefining performance, and transforming the way we work and lead. Here are the key learnings and perspectives from an insightful event that brought business and sport together.

Diggers & Dealers has always been a stage—but this year, more than ever, it highlighted the importance of storytelling. Company after company took the podium—not just to share updates, but to shape a story. A story about their value, their resilience, their strategy for the future. Behind every chart, resource estimate, or ESG headline was the same goal—to create influence.

People often say that they want change, particularly when things are tough and expensive, but do they really? Australia’s Federal election in May 2025 saw an overwhelming vote for the incumbent which, by definition, means more or less of the same. On the whole, though, why did the global trend of dumping incumbents finally break in April (Canada) and May (Australia) of 2025?

We at Seven Patterns are passionate about promoting the booming industries that underpin WA's social and economic activity and supporting them to create a sustainable future for all — headlined by the resources sector. That’s why, we partnered with Business News for a conversation-starting campaign around The Future of Resources — and more importantly, how to influence it.

Over the coming months, West Australians will have the opportunity (and indeed the obligation) to participate in two elections. Many businesses and organisations can be left wondering what does it all mean, and does the outcome even really matter? Here’s our take…

Seven Patterns is headquartered in Perth, yet 2024 was a year marked by ideas and influence stretching beyond Western Australian shores. As we prepare for the most wonderful time of the year, allow us to briefly summarise Seven Learnings from the Last Year…

In recent years, the general focus on decarbonisation has pivoted towards the ambitious goal of achieving a “zero-carbon” or “zero-emission” world. This lofty ambition is increasingly being used to set targets across international policies, national strategies, and individual sectors — but just how realistic is it?

When organisations consider their communications strategy and tactical roll-out, they typically prioritise external audiences. It’s very understandable. Customers, investors, the media and government are all quite naturally top of mind. There is, however, another very important piece to the puzzle that is too easy to overlook…

At Seven Patterns, we practice what we preach. Our team is committed to a continual process of improvement — refining the focus of our organisation, to better serve yours. That’s why we undertook a collaborative process, sparking valuable learnings and important lessons for any leader, and leading us to three core components — with one thing critical to the future of every organisation.

It’s that time of year, again — both the Federal Government and WA State Government handing down their respective budgets. Both budgets indicate a strong economic position in the short-term, focusing on easing cost of living pressures faced by households and businesses. “How will these budgets impact you and your business?” So glad you asked. Here’s our take…

It is often said that public speaking is one of the greatest fears for many people. We could easily add another, not unrelated, phobia to the list: being interviewed by the media. So, in the famous words of Ghostbusters; who you gonna call… when the media calls? Better still — before the media calls? Read on.

Political campaigning is starting to heat up, again, in Australia and abroad — namely the United States. So, what can organisations like yours learn from the increasing influence of social media on politics? Read on.

The mining sector stands at a crossroads, with a pivotal problem to be solved — how to ramp up operational production for energy transition, while simultaneously diminishing environmental footprint. This task comes with a backdrop of increasing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) pressures, calling for a transformative shift in the sector's operational activities.

The Voice Referendum provided valuable learnings for leaders and organisations, everywhere. Here are just a few collective perspectives from our team, when engaging stakeholders around an initiative, idea, or change in your context…

Picture this: you are having a discussion with a friend. It turns out, you both share a similar point of view on whatever the topic is. You smile, nod along and – unsurprisingly – the conversation fizzles out fairly quickly. Now picture a different scenario…

The AI model behind Midjourney is trained on vast datasets of existing images, allowing it to learn patterns, styles, and aesthetic preferences. It's important to note that while Midjourney (AI) can generate impressive and visually striking images, the creative process involves a collaboration between the tool and the user.

On July 6, Meta launched Threads, a platform rivalling Twitter that amassed over 30 million users within the first 24 hours of launch and over 100 million in the first week. So what exactly is Threads? Does my business really need another social media platform to post on?

We’ve all seen it, even if we perhaps haven’t given it too much thought. Switch on the TV news, head online to your favourite news site or pick up a newspaper and the story is the same: bad news rules. How can you work with bad news bias rather than fight against it and complain that no-one seems interested in your positive stories?

On May 9, Treasurer Jim Chalmers delivered the Federal Budget responding to the immediate global challenges with the task of setting Australia up for a better future. Coincidentally only two days later, former WA Premier and Treasurer Mark McGowan handed down the State Government’s sixth consecutive surplus, heavily supported by strong export growth.

Depending on who you talk to, traditional media is ‘dead’ and digital marketing is the only ‘smart’ thing to do. But like everything in life, it’s not that simple.
